Take A Hike-Getting in Shape for Spring Walking
After
watching the Winter Olympics for 2 weeks and seeing the great shape all the
athletes are in, you get the urge to be outside and start walking. Dog walking
is great exercise but just like humans, dogs who have laid around all winter
next to the fireplace have probably gotten a little out of shape. Prepare your
dog for spring walking with these easy tips and soon both you and your pet will
be doing something good for your health.
1. Extend walking time around the yard by a
few minutes each day. Do this for a week or so before going on an extended
walk.
2. Even if the snow has melted, the ground
and air are damp & chilly. Dress your pet in a jacket or coat to keep it
warm.
3. Make sure your dogs nails are trimmed.
Overgrown nails are painful and will hamper your dogs ability to walk
correctly.
4. After each walk, check your dogs pads for
any small stones, salt, or hair that may mat from the mud and water. Towel dry
their feet and coat if wet.
5. Exercise does vary according to each breed
of dog, but all dogs should be walked 1-2 times a day.
6. Make sure your dog has identification on
his collar.
7. Don’t forget to always clean up after your
pet on any walk.
